WordPress Website Design for Plant Based Kids

Plant Based Kids is an online plant-based nutrition practice and education hub run by Paula Hallam BSc (Med)(Hons) RD, PG Cert, based in Kingston. Paula is a registered specialist paediatric dietitian with 25 years experience offering professional, evidence-based nutrition advice for families who would like to raise their children plant-based or “mostly” plant-based.

When Paula came to me in 2024, she was launching an entirely new business. I’d previously built a website for her in 2017 for Tiny Tots Nutrition, but Plant Based Kids was a fresh venture with a completely different business model. This wasn’t just a brochure site—it needed to be the foundation of her entire practice, handling subscriptions, memberships, courses, consultations, resources, and e-commerce, all working together seamlessly.

I built a custom WordPress site with WooCommerce that manages every aspect of her business. The site sells her book, courses, and downloadable resources, runs a monthly subscription community with weekly Q&As, offers a membership programme with one-to-one consultations, and provides secure resource hubs for both. Each product automatically grants the right access to the right content. It’s a complex system built to be reliable, easy for Paula to manage, and straightforward for families to use.

Context

  • Kingston | Plant-Based Nutrition | 2024-Present
  • Paula Hallam is a registered specialist paediatric dietitian with 25 years experience
  • New business focused entirely on evidence-based plant-based nutrition for children
  • Previously worked with me on Tiny Tots Nutrition (2017)
  • Business model built around online courses, subscription community, membership programme, consultations, and resources

The Challenge

  • Brand new business being built from scratch
  • Complex business model requiring multiple product types working together
  • Needed to sell physical books, digital courses, downloadable resources
  • Required monthly subscription with private community access and weekly Q&As
  • Needed one-off membership with different resources and one-to-one consultation booking
  • Each product had to automatically grant correct access to protected content
  • Two separate resource hubs with member-only videos, meal planners, nutrition guides
  • Mailchimp automations needed to trigger for different courses
  • Everything had to work reliably without Paula needing technical knowledge
  • Site needed to be the foundation of the entire business, not just a marketing tool

The Solution

  • Custom WordPress theme built specifically for the business model
  • WooCommerce configured for physical products, digital downloads, subscriptions, and memberships
  • Subscription product: The Plant-Powered Families Hub—monthly community with weekly Q&As and dedicated resource hub
  • Membership product: Plant Powered Little People for Babies—one-off payment with one-to-one support, consultation booking, and separate resource hub
  • Private resource hubs with login access for both subscription and membership customers
  • Automated access control: purchasing a product automatically grants access to the right resources
  • Mailchimp integration with course-specific automations
  • Self-paced video courses and masterclasses
  • Review widget to build social proof

Technical Foundation

  • Custom WordPress theme, no page builders, clean code
  • WooCommerce handling multiple product types: physical books, digital downloads, subscription, membership
  • Subscription and membership plugin integration for automated access and recurring payments
  • Protected resource areas with member-only content
  • Automated access grants: buy a course, instantly access the videos; subscribe, immediately access the community hub
  • Mailchimp connected for newsletters and course-specific email sequences

The Result

  • The website is the foundation of Paula’s entire business
  • All her core offerings run through the site: courses, consultations, subscription community, membership programme
  • Families can purchase her book, enrol in courses, join the subscription, book consultations, and access resources all in one place
  • Complex system works reliably behind the scenes: automated access, protected content, recurring payments
  • Ongoing maintenance partnership providing technical support and content updates
  • Platform built to grow as her business expands
